As
the dog days of summer steadily grew hotter, we realized that, man; we need to
insulate the roof! The results are as good
as we hoped.
The
top outside temperature on the day after the insulation was installed was 103
degrees. Inside, the hottest it got was
87 degrees. During a record heat wave in
Sacramento (12 consecutive 100+ degree day highs), the hottest outdoor temp at
the Barn was 112 and the inside the temp high was 91 degrees and was in the
80’s most of the day.
Two
days before the insulation was installed the top temp was 103, but the best we
could cool down to was 99 degrees.

What
you are looking at is a spray-foam insulation by
Icynene (see http://www.icynene.com for
more information). The cost is more than
traditional fiberglass batt insulation, but the
benefits are a tight air seal and no sagging or compression over time.
