Worldstart Weekly Download: TCRestore95

It seems like lately most of our downloads have been XP only and I know there's still 9xers (95,98,98SE) out there, so this week I'm gettin' back to my roots. It's all about the 9x Operating Systems this week, and I have a free download that's going to knock your socks off. Besides the security, or lack of security, in the 9x OS's there's another really big advantage to the newer Windows versions (i.e. ME or XP), and that is the System Restore feature. The System Restore can get you out of trouble quickly and easily, when it comes to bad program installs, mysterious problems that may arise, or whatever else fate can throw at you. If you're not familiar with this process, it's quite simple and an invaluable tool that should be used whenever you plan on adding/removing programs from your system. TCRestore95 does something that the normal System Restore doesn't and that is the ability to create a boot disk to allow you to recover from a serious system crash where Windows will not load.

The program has a great "Help" file to describe the major options and features to you in an easy to understand manner. When installed it runs in the background, you should see the double "S" icon in the system tray, which let's you know that it's running.. TCRestore95 backs up system files every hour (default) allowing you to restore a very recent configuration if need be, and Registry files back up once a week (due to their size and the little change that usually goes on from day-to-day use).

The program is small (2MB) with a very rudimentary interface that is "set it up and leave it alone, 'till ya need it", type of controls. I can't stress enough the importance of reading the "Help" file especially the part about creating a boot disk, and printing out a command list for recovering from system crashes, because after it happens it's too late. The creator (Tarzan) calls his program "rateware" meaning it's free, but if you want, you can send him a donation of between $1 and $10 in accordance to how helpful you found the program to be on a scale of 1-10 (cute). Tarzan does have an email address to send him feedback or questions—it's in the "help" file. Like I said before, this is a great program that could be an indispensable tool for recovering not only from a bad program install but also a complete system catastrophe. Download it here:
