SUNDAYS - SINCE
1999

Hillary Clinton - the
rich lady. It didn't take Friday's release of seven years of tax
returns (the proverbial Friday bad news data dump) nor the $5 million
infusion to the coffers a while back to bring the fact
of the Clinton's wealth to our attention. Only it seems to resonate a
bit more, now that rural Pennsylvanians hold one of the last hands to
be revealed.. Her book advance was common knowledge as were
speaking revenues and all the rest which have been their
household's bread and butter. But these $13 million a year Clintons are
counting heavily now on blue collar voters. I don't think this compares
well to Obama, whose $40 million March haul was still made up of under
(an average of) $100 donations. A marketer would know these archetypal blue collar voters are
easily swayed,
because for a time we called them 'Reagan Democrats.' But this may be a
year when these voters tell us who they are, not vice-versa. There have been so many postulations of who this Hillary
Clinton person is, that I'm afraid she's adrift in some marketeering
limbo. We've seen her crying wolf, as with her war story, along with
those sometimes cackling, sometimes welling up, sometimes scolding
personas, none of which seems all that inner-directed. Perhaps the explanation is that it's because her campaign is
just another project for a man, Mark Penn, whose other work
involves making pronouncements on behalf
of clients to foreign governments, about matters running contrary to
the senator's policies.
Not surprisingly, he had
pledged NAFTA CAFTA SHAFTA at Horace Mann.
Wh-a-a-t? This
is what's wrong with that picture. It was Reagan who Balkanized
America, Bush Sr.'s people who elevated opposition research, specious
framing of the opponent's positions, and the politics of destruction to
new heights (er, depths), and the Bush Cheney regime which was, one
must hope, their
zenith. There's more to this
change band wagon than it appears Hillary's team
understands. So far, they have acted more like an Atwater tribute
band or the new crop of Rove wannabes. It will be an
interesting home stretch for Senator Clinton now that many of her
supposedly strongest supporters can see her as 'the rich lady' whose
plans depend on their precious support, while she employs the familial
pattern of dividing,
then pandering to splintered factions. I sure hope the super delegates
don't see any attractiveness there.
And
because I saw it on the Internet, it was true. I thought that whole
election of '06 deal seemed a little fishy. End the war. Ha! Too good
to be true, you know?
I mean, it was the Democrats' collective cowardice in not taking a stand before the '02 elections which made all the difference and haunts Ms. Clinton to this day. What if shock and awe 'worked' and the Democrats were painted as frightened children. No, it was all come to the dark side this and means justified by the ends that. For shame. So who should be surprised by continual folding like a pup tent? Even after winning the majority. It all makes sense. Now. Here it is finally, in black and white, and read all over. Thank you, The Politico. Wait a minute - hold the phone - this just in. New Mexico is among the first states to get a taste of John McCain's campaign themes to be. Whether he's this bastion of honor or just skilled at subjugating bad publicity is still not clear to me. In shorthand form, word got around that we torture. McCain raised a stink and demanded that the White House esplain' itself, Lucy. It got thrashed around behind closed doors at Pennsylvania Ave. until McCain was satisfied that the White House had his back were he to swear to the American people we don't torture. They had his back, alright. They changed the word torture into two words: extraordinary techniques. But now it's become clear that we will learn much more about him that's emotional than what would help you to vote. Such as that his service ID# was 624787. (There's film of him giving it to his interrogator.) We may never know what led McCain to give Bush and Cheney a pass on torture and other co-conspiracies or if it's the man or the myth seeking the highest office. I've found a common thread to both the McCain and Clinton campaigns. It comes from the title of a Firesign Theatre routine. "How can you be in two places at once, when you're not anywhere at all?" I'll bet Mark Penn knows the answer. |
