READING/LANGUAGE The results are in! All of our Kindergarten students benchmarked on the DIBELS test (state reading assessment). We are very proud of their hard work and accomplishments. It will be extremely important however, that your child continues to read and practice the skills he/she has learned throughout the summer months. Check to see if Mother Whiteside Library has any summer programs and get a library card for your child if he/she doesn’t have one. Work with your child on fluency: smooth, quick reading. Ask questions about what has been read (check for comprehension). Multiple readings of stories help to increase fluency as well as continued practice using the sight word flash cards we are sending home. MATH Help your child practice rote counting, reciting the days of the week & months of the year, writing numbers 1-100, adding (counting on), subtracting (counting backwards), counting objects accurately then writing the numeral, graphing activities, identifying coins & their value, counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s and recognizing numbers to 100 in random order (using flashcards is an easy way to do this). HANDWRITING Please help your child practice writing all letters, upper & lower case (A-Z) and spell words with which they are familiar. Journal writing, stories, letters and book making are some other good ideas. REMEMBER: PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!
