PRESS RELEASE - FALL 2004

Fell Pony Society "North American Liaison Officer" Resigns

Laura Hart respectfully tendered her resignation as Fell Pony Society Liaison Officer to North America in December of 2003. Her resignation took effect on January 31, 2004 .

Mrs Hart, who had served since early 2001, was the only person to ever to work in this capacity.  The NA Liaison Officer position was a Council appointed ambassador representing the FPS “to” North America . However, this Liaison position is now replaced by individual members of the FPS Overseas Sub-Committee who serve as the communication point for the various Overseas Branch Representatives.  The OS Branch Representatives in NA will be the conduits between their particular NA Branch organization and their OSC contact person, the newly appointed Nick Woolley.

“I resigned for a number of reasons,” said Mrs Hart, “but mostly because I was becoming too busy with my own career as a freelance journalist/photographer.  I am most proud of two things accomplished during my tenure as Liaison: one was the creation of the ‘FPS Educational and Promotional Program’ for North America and the other was the work I assisted in that allowed the inclusion of the Fell breed on the ‘Conservation Priority List’ for the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.  The Ed/Prom program helped pave the way for proper understanding of the Fell breed in North America by only publishing information on Fells which was approved by my council-approved consultants. I thank those of you who have been my mentors during my term as Liaison and I wish the Fell breed a healthy future all over the globe.”

“Laura Hart’s purchase of Hardendale Black Jack (a.k.a. ‘Merlin’) in 2000 marked the beginning of a remarkable commitment to the Fell breed,” said FPS Overseas Sub-committee Chairman, Sue Millard. “Though as she admits, she is still a novice, she has worked with great enthusiasm to promote Fells in North America as they are seen in Britain – as a strong, useful, all-round pony rather than an exotic species. To this end she has lent Merlin for the last 2 summers to the Kentucky Horse Park , where visitors can see many breeds of horse and watch many equestrian activities. Merlin seems to adore the limelight in the Horse Park ’s twice-daily “Parade of Breeds”. He is proving to be a wonderful ambassador for the Fells in North America : ridden astride or sidesaddle, jumped, or driven in a variety of vehicles, he ably demonstrates the versatility of the Fell.” Merlin makes friends at the Kentucky Horse Park
