Pony Society and Conservancy of the Americas press
release:
submitted, in Fall of 2004, to the Fell Pony Society newsletter,
Native Pony magazine, and
American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC) newsletter:
Oldest NA Fell Organization
Incorporates and Becomes a
Recognized FPS Overseas Branch
One
year ago, in August of 2003, Fell ponies in NA reached the 100 mark.
As of August 2004, one year later, the total is nearly 150 ponies.
During that time frame the Fell Pony Society
and Conservancy of Americas has incorporated and is now
pleased to announce its new status as one of three newly recognized Fell Pony
Society Overseas Branches.
Same Conservancy
Format: The Conservancy
recently incorporated as an educational, conservation non-profit.
It continues to emphasize the sharing of information and to facilitate
networking with the same leadership and focus as when it first formed by
stressing presentation of the breed as defined by the FPS Breed Standard, by
encouraging breeders to protect the breed’s genetic diversity through
collective conservation efforts, by creating educational promotions, and by
supporting the network of like-minded breeders, enthusiasts, and breed
associations around the globe.
History:
The Conservancy is the oldest Fell pony organization in
North America
. It began
in 1999 as a result of 100% of the NA breeders and 98% of the known owners
pulling together to form the first Fell network in the western hemisphere. By
the end of 2000, its members had established a world wide Fell network by phone,
mail, and Internet that included www.Fellpony.org
and the first Fell e-mail communication group: www.Groups.Yahoo.com/groups/FellPony.
The Conservancy conservation efforts initiated the first Fell DNA studies
at the
University
of
Kentucky
and distributed Syndrome information on behalf of
Fell Pony 2000. Conservancy members were also instrumental in initiating
the first Internet Educational Programs for the FPS.
The Conservancy was enlisted by American Livestock Breeds Conservancy to provide
data for the first ALBC Census of Fell ponies in North America. In 2003
it participated in providing data for the second ALBC
Census.
Past exhibition events include the first Fells exhibited at Equitana and
the Carolina Classic, and the
Kentucky
Horse
Park
in co-partnership with ALBC
which included demos,
parades, lectures, clinics and a full array of in-hand and performance M&M
classes for rare breed Native ponies.
In
2004: The Conservancy actively promoted
Fells and the Fell Pony Society at a Wilderness Packing Clinic, the Small
Farmers Auction and Swap Meet, Horse Progress Days (a farmers meet), from
April - October at the Kentucky Horse Park, and
through several national equine publication education breed articles and plans
to have a presence at Equine Affaire.
Conservancy
resources are available to other
associations, members and non-members alike.
